A nib manufacturer located in Berlin, Germany; founded in 1852 as Heintze & Blanckertz to produce linoleum cutters (for linoleum block printing) and steel pens (dip nibs). The company was the first German manufacturer of steel nibs, and beginning in about 1913 had its own rolling mill. Partially destroyed by the bombing of Berlin during World War II, the factory was rebuilt and the company nationalized as VEB Berliner Schreibfeder in 1949. In 1953, VEB began producing butterfly nibs for fountain pens, and in 1955, tipped nibs. In 1994 the company went bankrupt but was reconstituted by two long-time employees, Joachim Hildebrand and Wolfgang Lemme, using the first two letters of each man's name to form the company name.
 
In 1994, Germany's JoWo took over the guitar-part maker ABM and expanded into other products. At same time, VEB's machinery and stamping dies were exported to China, leading to the production of nibs labeled "Iridium Point Germany" using the original molds. Even today, nibs are produced under the JoWo brand in both German and Chinese factories.
 
Today JoWo produces both steel and gold nibs of high quality. Since 2012, Spoke Design has created a number of mechanical pencils and pens for sale via Kickstarter and their own website.

Mechanical pencils have included Model 3, [[Spoke 4|Model 4]], Model 5-2, Model 5-3, and Model 6.

Spoke Pen production began in 2019 following completion of the [https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bc7/spoke-pen Spoke Pen Kickstarter]. Spoke Pen models have included the Classic Series, Crush Series, Jet Series, and Editions. These pens shipped with Uniball Signo UMR-1-05 gel ink refill (from the Uniball Signo DX Pen) and can take:
* UMR-8# (refill for Signo 207/307 pen)
* Pentel LR# (refill for Energel RTX pen)
* Uniball SCR-# (refill for Jetstream ballpoint).

In 2020, the [https://spokedesign.com/collections/roady/ Spoke Roady] pocket pen was introduced. This series is compatible with Parker-style refills and ships with a Uni Jetstream SXR-600-07 Black 0.7mm refill.

Spoke began producing fountain pens in 2021 and initially released the Icon, Axle, and Axle S models.

The special feature of this pencil is a particular mechanism (referred as "Kuru Toga Engine") which rotates the lead every time the tip is pressed and then released from the paper surface.
This mechanism prevents the tip from becoming chisel-shaped (therefore more prone to crumble or break) and ensures a consistent line width. The tip rotation is obtained by a spring and three gears, and the revolving action is visible by a rotating logo. 
All models except the "Pipe Slide", the "Advance" and the "Advance Metal" (also known as "Advance Metal Punching Grip”), rotate the lead approximately 9 degrees per stroke (40 strokes for a complete revolution).

The Rotring 600 was first released in 1989.<ref name="rheritage">[https://www.rotring.com/uk/heritage 1989 Entry] Rotring Heritage</ref> Its design can be traced back to the preceding Rotring 500 series, which debut in 1985 with burgundy plastic barrels and metal knurled grips. The Rotring 500 is contemporary with the almost identical Rapidomatic series by Koh-I-Noor USA, which was bought over by Rotring in 1985. The Rapidomatic series of 'fine lead mechanical pencils' was a refinement from Koh-I-Noor's Select-O-Matic II 2.0mm leadholder, which is itself a refinement of the company's Select-O-Matic 5617 (1955–1984), which featured a hexagonal metal body, knurled grip and patented lead hardness indictor in the push button. The first version of the Rotring 500 did not have a 'red ring' around its lead indicator knob.

Rotring describes the 600 as their "entry into the upscale writing instrument market"<ref name="rheritage" />, "designed with a hexagonal barrel to prevent it from rolling on the architects drawing table. It is machined out of one piece of brass on a lathe, providing it with ample weight to ensure that the architect need not apply extra pressure when creating"<ref name="rheritage" />.

The Rotring 600 was originally made in Germany before production moved to Japan.

A late 1988 catalog lists the first version of Rotring 600 only in 0.5mm lead diameter. It was offered in silver or black color and featured a 'thin' red ring around the lead indicator knob. The familiar 'thick' red ring was only introduced in 1990.

==Knurling==

There is no printing on the cap or body. This generation features deep knurling, bevel above red ring 50% of height. This generation was only available with a steel nib. The special feature of this pencil is a particular mechanism (referred as "Kuru Toga Engine") which rotates the lead every time the tip is pressed and then released from the paper surface.
This mechanism prevents the tip from becoming chisel-shaped (therefore more prone to crumble or break) and ensures a consistent line width. The tip rotation is obtained by a spring and three gears, and the revolving action is visible by a rotating logo. 
All models except the "Pipe Slide", the "Advance" and the "Advance Metal" (also known as "Advance Metal Punching Grip”), rotate the lead approximately 9 degrees per stroke (40 strokes for a complete revolution). 
"Pipe Slide" and the two "Advance" versions rotate the lead twice as fast per stroke: approximately 18 degrees per stroke (20 strokes for a complete revolution), thus they are more suitable for Western characters which are made of fewer and longer strokes compared to Asian characters, and also for use with softer leads (such as 2B) which wear down more quickly. 
"Pipe Slide", "Advance" and "Advance Metal" versions also share a sliding sleeve. 
All Kuru Toga pencils are available in 0.5 mm and in a variety of colours, but some models are also available in 0.3 mm and 0.7 mm.
There are also special limited editions featuring characters by Disney, Peanuts, Sanrio and Studio Ghibli. 
"Roulette" and "High Grade" use the Uni eraser refill size C, while all the other models use the Uni eraser refill size S.

'''Kuru Toga''' is a mechanical pencil line developed by the [[Mitsubishi Pencil Company|Uni Mitsubishi]] company. The special feature of this pencil is a particular mechanism (referred as "Kuru Toga Engine") which rotates the lead every time the tip is pressed and then released from the paper surface.
This mechanism prevents the tip from becoming chisel-shaped (therefore more prone to crumble or break) and ensures a consistent line width. The tip rotation is obtained by a spring and three gears, and the revolving action is visible by a rotating logo. 
All models except the "Pipe Slide" and the "Advance", rotate the lead approximatively 9 degrees per stroke (40 strokes for a complete revolution). 
"Pipe Slide" and "Advance" versions rotate the lead twice faster: approximatively 18 degrees per stroke (20 strokes for a complete revolution), thus they are more suitable for Western characters which are made of fewer and longer strokes compared to Asian characters, and also for use with softer leads (such as 2B) which wear down more quickly. "Pipe Slide" and "Advance" versions also share a sliding sleeve. 
All Kuru Toga pencils are available in 0.5 mm and in a variety of colours, but some models are also available in 0.3 mm and 0.7 mm.
There are also special limited editions featuring characters by Disney, Peanuts, Sanrio and Studio Ghibli. 
"Roulette" and "High Grade" use the Uni eraser refill size C, while all the other models use the Uni eraser refill size S.

Japanese company [[Muji]] produced a mechanical pencil with the same rotating lead mechanism as the original Kuru Toga. It could be found in the Muji online catalog until 2018. 
The pencil (only available in 0.5 mm) has a white plastic body and a plastic clip, and is manufactured in China.
